A couple of weeks ago my boyfriend and I decided to go to 3rd Ward Handmade Holiday Craft Fair and check out what the local crafters had in store and possibly do some christmas shopping. Spent most of the time thinking "I could make this" and didn't really buy anything till i saw some amazing screen printed sheets of paper! The colors and the shapes pop at me and drove me the atm to pull cash out to take these guys home! Kayrock Screen-printing is the best!!!

Halloween 2011

So for the last five years I somehow have managed to dress up as animal for Halloween, and this year was not any different. In true Ben style i sketched out possible ideas but already knew i was going to be a Jelly fish! I'm already thinking of next year!

List of ingredients to make a jelly fish;

2 yards of chiffon

1.5 yards of silk organza

6 yards of silk rat tail trim

6 yards of silk shinny trim

one piece of elastic

one chinese oval lantern

7 fiber optics

12 led UV lights and batteries

= ONE JELLY FISH

Dia De Los Muertos

So this year I decided to build a alter to pay respect to our love ones that had pass. I molded the sugar skulls two weeks before the day so I would have time to work on my Halloween costume. I bought the skull modes from a online shop called Mexican sugar skull. They carry a huge selections of molds and day of the dead decorations.

After the sugar skulls dried for for a couple of days i put them together with some royal icing and at the same time are started making tissue paper flowers to resemble the bright marigolds that are traditionally used in the alter.

I been off and on working on this black panther since December. The set in jaw is done just need to finish the body. Still contemplating rather i should flock the whole bust or if i should saw it up? I'm loving the style lines so far just need to see the final mock up and see if it executes the way i want it to look. here a couple of pics of the work in progress.

I have a 36" triangle canvas that i have had for about 7 years and never knew what to do with it till today... While doing some random searches online i came across a mexican painting of Jesus in the Trinity composition. I fell in love with the traditional iconography and love the symbolism and shapes! So i want to make this a modern self portrait some how but keeping the same ideas of the original one but in a modern setting. Here is the research i have pulled so far.

I bought this for my boyfriend and had it framed. Its a sheet of LSD blotter art! I bought from some S.F.guys who were selling, zines, cholo tee shirt iron ons, and blotter art! The guy thanked me and then apologized for it not having acid on the sheet..

I went to my first NY Art book fair two years ago at milk studios in Chelsea. Nothing really caught my attention and the only books that did where dead stock books that where way too expensive. But something caught my attention in another room. As I walked over to the next booth i noticed a pile about 3" high with unbounded pages and on them were these amazing litho prints/collage. I took a closer look to examine them and noticed these were made by the surrealist artist Max Ernst. I did a report on him in my Modern Art class back in college but i couldn't place his name to these prints. I'm not sure why i walked away and didn't buy one up but i left the art book fair empty handed but a implanted image in my head.
Then in the Summer of 2009 while visiting the Muse de Orsay in Paris i noticed the huge banner outside the museum that Read "Max Ernst, Une semaine de bonté" and i freaked out! It took me a minute to figure where the exhibition was in this huge ornate museum, but once i found it i was shocked at how big the collection was. The exhibition was broken down into five rooms that correlated to the "five booklets" that went back to the title of the exhibition that translate to "A Week of Kindness". Each room had a different topic and the day of the week. I did not want to spend 60 euros on a heavy ass book that i would have to carry the rest of my trip in Europe, so i bought a Max Ernst post card. When i came back to the states i really wish i had bought the book since it was so hard to get even via Amazon.UK.

Last week my good friend Helen invited me to PS1 MOMA viewing of NY Art Book Fair before it was officially open to the public. Walking aimlessly through the snobbish vendors the only thing i could think of was how i wish that vendor that was selling the Max Ernest prints was here. As i walked over to the next room i see a group of spectators crowding a table and going through piles of prints. I walk straight to the crowed and i know what they are, unbounded Max Ernest prints.

I didn't realized that on a large 20" x10" print you get two prints on both sides.
i was so happy to see these and so torn which one to get, so i got two!
These are my babies, cant wait to frame them!!!

Back in September my friend Jorge and I were shopping at Barney's NYC on Fashion Night Out. Not really aware of the events going on at Barney's that night I picked up the flyer to see the agenda for the night. Mary Kate and Ashley didn't catch my attention, not even lil miss fashion blogger herself, Tavi. My eyes went straight down that list to Daphne Guinness! Daphne Guinness was there to promote her new eau de parfum, Daphne. We rushed down stairs not really sure what to say to her or ask her but waited in line anxiously! Jorge decided to buy the perfume that was also a collaboration with Comme Des Garcons. I was reading a quote in W magazine that was interesting and explained how she came to choose the scent for Daphne, "In scent, she aims to conjure up the smells of men’s colognes and churches—evocations of her childhood. “ sounds like my childhood!
Our turn came and believe it or not we were talking to her about everything and anything, I'm talking a 10 minute conversation and picture op time too. She told us that fashion has become her inspiration and without it the world would be a mechanical machine and boring place. She talked about her friends (Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow) being dead. This women is AMAZING!!

This is how you end up on blogs in Tokyo Japan, get drunk, have money, have amazing taste in street wear and chill with someone that speaks the language! DONE! So Tomas and i got our drink on while roaming the streets of Harajuku in search of something. All i had on my agenda was i need a new pair of sneakers exclusive to Tokyo or Harajuku and a new messenger bag. We stumble into Gettry store on Cat street and Tomas and i started contemplating which shoes look good on who and just making nonsense. Tomas ended up buying a sweet pair of muster yellow boots i think they were Terrem. I couldn't make my mind up and was not yet sold. Tomas's friend translated the blog entry and told us that the guy was having a bad day and we made his day when we came in making all this ruckus and trying on different shoes! haha..

I ended up falling in love with my shoes at Atmos just next door.. They are The Nike Terminator High Harajyuku and are limited to Harajuku Cat Street and in collaboration with Harajyuku vs.Ueno collection. The soles glow in the dark, didn't realized that till i stumble drunk home one night in the dark..

After last years costume i had to step it up and deliver another amazing costume this year. I pulled inspiration two months in advanced so i could see what direction i wanted to take it in and how much prep time i needed just in case i got bombed at work. Due to a crazy work schedule at work i went for the one i felt was easier. I took inspiration from Riccardo Tisci Spring 2011 women's wear and elephant research. The out come is a very interrupted clash of a elephant head meets Moroccan Muslims.

A couple of months ago i had a pretty vivid and intense dream about committing suicide. I think a mixture of a argument and stress at work might have been the formula for it. Although it would sound like a bad nightmare to anyone else, it was actually really beautiful to me. Still having mix emotions about the whole dream i subconsciously decided to make a dream catcher. Some how i envisioned a triangle dream catcher. I have always responded well with the 3's not sure if its has anything with me being the III, but a triangle sounded amazing.. I bought three 33" dowels; tie dye indigo fabric from Japan; hand dyed indigo twine, 6 macaw feathers. It looks amazing so far but its still the foundation.. i want to add a couple of nick knacks and i don't ever think it will ever be done but will try to update the photos when i feel its close to done..

I went to Tokyo, Japan this summer for free just for entering a sweepstakes contest on SLAMXHYPE.COM. I was the chosen one out of 7 thousand people. That's pretty crazy if you ask me! The incentive that i was definitely looking forward to, was to meet up with a bunch of Tokyo street designers but they never came through on their end. But who can complain when i got free flight, hotel, and spending money. The highlight of my trip was hanging out with my good friend Tomas(S.F.)who happened to be out there the same time i was out there. This trip taught me one thing, i really need to start playing the lotto!

I really think this video captures the overall feel of how my vacation went!

Its been only two weeks since i got back from vacation and i still cant shake these post vacation blues!!! Maybe its cause i got to spend quality and well needed time with my parents? Maybe I was inspired beyond belief in the Mexican Caribbean? Maybe I miss speaking Spanish and being around my people? THE BEACH, THE FOOD, THE WEATHER???
So many reasons why I cant get back in the NY way of things but little by little I'm starting to decipher all these mental images of inspiration from my trip. And soon i can work it into my last spring group that i been trying to finish for my portfolio!!!

Been busy the last couple of months with work, life, and moving. But recently got settled into our new apartment in Green-Point Brooklyn and the creative juices are starting to flow! This issue with Alexander McQueen on The Face Magazine is one of the main catalyst that trigger my interest in fashion. I had mixed feelings about the fashion industry and i still do. But his ideas and philosophy we're beyond inspirational. He had a story to tell and it showed in every collection, and even though the final results were always amazing beautiful constructed garments the concepts were far from it at times. I live vicariously through his collections from season to season.To know that one can push themselves to create bigger and better collections year after year, and stand by their aesthetics and values and not get polluted by directions from the higher powers above was inspirational! His vision was truly visionary. His construction details, silhouettes, tailoring, fabrics, and accessories were one of kind and the main supporting characters to his story.

I related to him on a more physical level. My place in the fashion worlds has sometimes made me feel insecured with my sex, weight, sexuality and ethnicity because of the constant pressure of the absolute perfect persona. McQueen represented realness and hope to me because not only did he never changed his image but he also came from a working class family and working class town. He was a real gay man! He went out of his way to create stuff that was not perfect and not socially pretty but once mixed with his talent, he created something that was so new it was beautiful beyond standers.

Today marks the final chapter to the most theatrical, artistic, inspiring, vivid and up lifting story i would ever see.. And like everything in life there are more stories to come but this one left a lasting impression.

I was released from the New York Sleep Institute this morning at 7am.. My doctor suggested i go in and have a full sleep apnea evaluation due to some episodes i had at night. I dont have trouble sleeping but i did wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air two times within the last year. The whole process was weird and i swear i had a electro sensor on every part of my body. I was able to fall asleep fine but i had a hard time moving since all these wires made it hard to get comfy. Now i just have to wait for my results and see what the doctor has to say...

i did this at work today.. but its a pretty version of how i looked.. but it did feel like i was being hooked up to be transform into a avatar body or at least thats what i told my self...

I was inspired and started drawing this guy while watching the movie SIN NOMBRE.. It was such a deep and intense movie, so intense that lost my focus and it threw off my perspective on this guys face..haha So i'm thinking i might start a new series of portraits on my lovely brown recycle paper!

so after some research and obsessing I started looking up the cast and director to get a better understanding of the foundation of this movie.. Didn't take long till i came across the director of the movie and boy was i thrown off.. Cary Fukunaga!! A California boy born in Oakland to a Japanese father and Swedish mother, you know i was intrigued. Has lived in Mexico, Japan, France and now resides in New York. Fluent in French and Spanish.. Yes thats right, I'M OBSESSED!!

Obsession Can Lead to Your Greatness..

I was thinking of doing a little series of portraits of ex lovers and originally i was going to paint them in acrylic. I decided to do them in watercolor to see the end results. I'm pleases with the results and know how to approach them if i do paint them.

So the whole idea for this series was for it to be a visual documentation of my past. At first i wanted to use real images of my ex lovers but then it evolve into the idea of having the viewer be desensitize by the portrait and so focusing more on the text. I used Polaroids of models from fashion week to play with the idea of obsessing over something you can't have, but want. I used real names, a personal snippet of information and the time i was with each of them. Adding this information becomes a performance in itself. It gives the viewer a slight arousal as to who these people are and then creating their obsession with the slight information i have given them.

I have pixelated the email passwords since its technically a felony in most USA states! I also pixelate one of the guys name since he is still very much a huge obsession!

I was going through some blogs and came across the latest "it" collaboration, Terence Koh for Converse shoes.. His new design strips the iconic shoe down to its raw and unfinished foundation. I thought it was a pretty coo idea and the way it was presented was even more thoughtful. It got me thinking about how much i miss model drawing.

I have roughly spent about the last 10 years behind a easel either drawing or painting and it always feels like I'm still learning and progressing.. I started taking some classes at the Spring Studio in SOHO last year around this time and I think i might start taking some more classes.. Here are a couple of 45min poses which i'm way better at then 5min poses.

Its surprising that i been at my current job for almost 2 years
and i really haven't used illustrator for either then a couple
of graphic tee's and some layouts. But as much as i sometimes
hate creating flats and patterns i always some how fall in love
with the end results..

I did these two groups above for a job project when i first
moved out here to NYC..

i worked on were these crazy drape dresses. So i got board fast
and took a lot of breaks and worked on these guys.. i love the

So i did it, didn't procrastinate and actually worked on and wore a pretty sweet costume.. From the reaction i got i think i did a good job..

I'm obsessed with these Stockholm Swedish Sisters called FIRST AID KIT.. There is something soothing and appealing about their vocals over an acoustic guitar.. I found out about them a couple of months ago through the Fever Ray site. They are also on the same Wichita Recordings label. I really wanted to see them next week but their U.S. tour got canceled due to visa issues.. They wont be out here till the spring which sucks cause their such a fall/winter sounding band..

So, some how i became a fan of the YSL manifesto campaign on facebook. And about last week i was just checking out the average feeds on facebook and noticed the YLS collector item tote bag that look pretty fresh. I clicked on the link edger to see this years design and it asked me to register to be one of the first one hundred to win the tote bag.. So i did with no hesitation. I got a e-mail this morning telling me i won one.. CRAZY, i never win anything.. So i responded and sent them my info.. Hopefully it dose not get jacked had them send it to my work cause i know if sent to my pad that crack head lady down the block would be rocking it.. but how hot would that be?!?

I was at the Super Savings grocery store in Philly this weekend noticed that their Halloween merchandise was out on the floor already. Granted it was 90 degrees and pouring it still got me thinking about my costume this year. This year i'm getting a head start, so i don't procrastinate and have to work on something last minute.

So just got back from my European holiday, needless to say got hella inspired, but more so inner growth wise.
So my parents were shocked at the fact that i wasn't the first of my siblings to get a tattoo. As a young boy i spent many countless hours drawing on my arms and creating amazing designs that had no rime or reason. And i have always been fascinated with tattoos but never could commit to something that is so permeant. Granted i live in Williamsburg Brooklyn and the average tattoo count per person is over 25 and if Magian Miller has one, i want one too.

But not sure where i want to go with it and so the researching kicks in. I do know i want something with script slightly minimal slightly vintage? Maybe on my arms, above elbows, or neck? black with maybe one color for a pop.

I spent a lovely sunday at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and checked out the new Max Ernst show called "Une semaine de bonté" (the Original Collages). I dont know if i want something exactly like the prints or playing with the idea of how he mixed different existing prints and collage new images into it.. I know it shouldn't be that difficult but here is the inspiration i have so far..

I have not worked on my portfolio in over a year and now that it seams that everyone
is working on projects and portfolios, i want in on the action. So i been spending hours online researching South American Indian tribes, Macaws, Toucans and chameleons and how they survive in their natural surroundings. I'm fascinated with the bright colors these tribes use for their own body decor and or armor and how this is used as mechanisms of protection. I was also intrigued by the bright color of Macaws and Toucans and how their bright color feathers are used as a natural defenses against predators. So i'm going to start working on a fabric board and sketches will post when done!!!

Its only been three months since i made the migration to Mecca, and here i am living in Brooklyn, NY. I seems like i never left Los Angeles, sure the people i love are not in the same city, i dont have to drive, and the weather is not perfect, but its fine! Been so busy with work and trying to get back on my feet from the lost of my grandfather that i forgot where i'm at. I'm in NEW YORK FUCKERS!!

I like where I'm at.. It feels good, so good i want to start writing a screen play...

On the subway going home from work i saw the ads for a new movie called The Wackness! not sure how i feel about the movie but it got me thinking about how life was in 1994. I been a lot of place seen a lot of faces but till this day my most happiest times have been from 1998-2003..HAHA.. random. The era of being gay, retail, boys, college, art, new loves, raves, fashion and games drooped against the background of Los Angeles. Wow!! I got super excited!! The stories are there, the characters have been developed, the setting its set.. I just need to translate my visual thoughts into text..Its going to be a while but, look out for it!
